Proper work procedures and safe work habits go hand in hand. Employees who show a positive attitude to work habits are often seen to have fewer workplace injuries.

Here is a safe-attitude audit in which you can ask all your team members to participate. Tell them the answers are private—they
can assess their "accident potential" and decide if they need an "attitude adjustment":

Do you . . .

• Take pride in doing the job the right way? Yes r No r
• Always place a high emphasis on doing quality work? Yes r No r
• Respect and follow company rules? Yes r No r
• Ask your team leader or supervisor when you don't understand something? Yes r No r
• Set a good example to other team members? Yes r No r
• Look out for the safety of your team or others around you? Yes r No r
• Participate and pay attention during safety training sessions? Yes r No r
• Make sure you have adequate rest so that you are not operating equipment while sleepy? Yes r No r
• Acknowledge that when you are feeling angry or upset, your ability to concentrate suffers? Yes r No r

Unless you answered "yes" to all of the above, you could be at increased risk for a workplace injury. You will go far in the right direction if you give yourself an "attitude adjustment". Remember, you are not making this adjustment for anyone's benefit but your own. Keep in mind, however, that a positive attitude is contagious. It influences the actions of those who work around you.

So play your part and develop a positive mindset for everything you do—it does make a difference!
